Downtown Farmington
Michigan Development
Volunteer information
Main Street Oakland County is a program
instituted by the Oakland County Planning & Economic Development
Services to provide assistance for the downtown revitalization and
preservation.
The program is unique because it is the first time in the nation that
a county has implemented a Main Street program on a countywide basis.
Main Street Oakland County partnered with the National Trust for
Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Center (NMSC) to bring the
program to Oakland County.
In the Fall of 2002 the City of Farmington Downtown Development
Authority was recognized as an official Main Street Community and
entitled to receive three years of technical assistance from
Main
Street Oakland County.
The mission of Main Street Oakland County is to maximize
the economic potential and to preserve the heritage and sense of
place of Oakland County’s historic commercial districts by
encouraging and facilitating the use of the Main Street Four-Point
Approach which emphasizes comprehensive economic development
within the context of historic preservation.
The Four-Point Approach established the following four committees to
set goals and develop strategies to revitalize the downtown:
Organization
Building consensus and cooperation among the
many groups and individuals who have a vital role in the revitalization
process.
Promotion
Marketing the traditional commercial district’s assets to customers,
potential investors, new businesses, local citizens and visitors.
Design
Enhancing the physical appearance of the downtown by rehabilitating
historic buildings, encouraging supportive new construction, developing
sensitive design management systems and long-term planning.
Economic Restructuring
Strengthening the Downtown
Farmington's existing economic base while finding ways
to expand it to meet new opportunities and challenges from outlying
development.
